A recent post in the Retroist Forum has me watching videos of Thanksgiving Parades of the past. That 1935 one is hard to beat, but I really like this home movie from 1969.
A big thank you to Retroist regular, Tom Krohne or Monsterfink, as he is better known over on his Monster Spook Show blog. How can you make a Christmas parade better? Add Santa Claus? Sure. Add the Munsters as his escort? You have the best parade ever!
Thanks to Brainwerk for uploading this Universal Newsreel over on YouTube!
I hope everyone is having an absolutely fantastic Thanksgiving today or at the very least an enjoyable Turkey Day. I missed the Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Parade this year but I can at least remember when Kermit the Frog served as newscaster for the balloon in his image back in 1977.
A huge thanks to the Muppet Wiki for the photo you see above.
I know what I will be watching tomorrow morning, The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! I cannot wait, especially to see the new Balloons. Here are previews of 3 of the new ones:
Diary of a Wimpy Balloon
Kung Fu Panda
Superman has always been larger then life, especially when he was a balloon in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Here is a classic photo of the Kryptonian as he is marched down the avenue during a parade in the 1940s. Over the years, the Superman Balloon has resurfaced at the parade. But for my money, nothing beat the simplicity of this old school Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Superman Balloon.
