A huge thanks to my great friend, Christopher Tupa who spotted these wonderful Jack in the Box Universal Monsters toys on Ebay and nabbed them for me. Unfortunately I do not live in an area that has one of these restaurants so I had no idea these little guys even existed. Make sure to follow Chris’s link so you can purchase some of his fantastic artwork!
The results are in and this week’s top retro commercial is … Jack in the Box Apology.
In the 1980s, Jack in the Box decided to no chase McDonald’s core consumers, families, and instead aimed its sights on higher end consumer or “yuppies”. This culminated in the changing of the Jack in the Box name to the more affluent sounding “Monterey Jack’s” in 1985. It was a PR disaster. People were confused and sales slowed. One year later the Jack in the Box name was back and this apology commercial began airing.
