I think it is more than fair to say that Kenner went all in with Alien in 1979. For example last month I shared the stunning revelation they had produced a board game based on the film. While Ridley Scott’s sci-/horror movie is a masterpiece it was an R rated feature as well. So you might be able to picture my confusion when I learned Kenner had in addition released the “Alien Terror” movie viewer.
In this case “Alien Terror” is an abridged version of the 1979 movie. In fact it is so short that in all honesty if you hadn’t seen the movie it wouldn’t make any sense. Of course there is only so much that Kenner could share from Alien with kids, right?
By all means, try to convince me this movie cartridge didn’t cause a few nightmares in 1979.
With this in mind – try to remember that Kenner had certainly found success with their line of movie viewers. Beginning in 1975 when they released film catridges and viewers for Snoopy, The Six Million Dollar Man, and The Bionic Woman.
Especially successful for Kenner was the Star Wars movie viewer and cartridges set in 1977. On the other hand there were only four film cartridges produced for that series, plus a fifth that was included with the set.
Many fans have wondered why Kenner didn’t continue with the line. Because of this mystery some people feel that perhaps 20th Century Fox stepped in and asked Kenner to cease production. For fear of cutting into the profits of repeat viewings in the theater.
Now that we’ve taken a look at 1979’s “Alien Terror” why not check out Snoopy Meets the Red Baron?
This film cartridge comes from the Fisher Price Movie Viewer line. It did better than Kenner, lasting until the middle of the 1980s. Thanks to the many licensing agreements with the likes of Walt Disney, Marvel, Hasbro and many more.
Originally released to theaters back on August 8, 1986, this is a film that had a lasting impression on me to say the very least. To say the tone of the movie had a bit more of an edge than the syndicated TV series is something of an understatement as within the first 10 minutes of the film we fans were witness to the slaughter of some of our favorite animated heroes.
Though to be fair it’s not like the Decepticons didn’t receive their share of fallen warriors…all in an attempt to get kids to buy brand new Transformers toys. Having said that however it’s not like the movie wasn’t incredible – even while I watched the movie in a perpetual state of shock and awe I was enjoying every minute.

As I’ve mentioned on the site before, when it came to transforming toy lines my heart was always with Hasbro’s The Transformers. Which might be why I overlooked the Computer Warriors toys from Mattel back in 1989…even though now I certainly wished I could have at least picked up the Pepsi transforming hover jet playset!
The Computer Warriors story finds that a government computer has malfunctioned and it is producing an evil army of viruses, their leader Megahert manages to guide his minions into the real world to begin the take over of all computer systems. Thankfully the same computer realizes it’s mistake and programs four heroic antiviruses dubbed the Computer Warriors, led by Romm, to dispatch the evil Megahert and his cohorts before they can take over the world.
To make sure their activities are not discovered in the real world both forces learn to hide in common objects of the day as in the already mentioned Pepsi can, a soccer trophy, flashlight, pencil sharpener, calculator, digital desk clock, a book entitled “Invasion of the Viruses”, and even a desktop computer.
There was even a special animated movie produced for the toy line and since it’s a Mattel production you might even spot a familiar figure hidden in a toy chest. For your viewing pleasure is Computer Warriors: The Adventure Begins!
It would certainly seem that the great but often overlooked Battle Beasts from back in 80s is finally getting are finally their second chance thanks to IDW and Diamond Select Toys! The two entertainment giants have teamed up to not only bring us the new comic book adventures of the Beasts but new toys as well.
From the IDW/Diamond Select Toys announcement: ““Battle Beasts is a great fit for IDW”, said writer Bobby Curnow. “What’s so important about toys is they enable kids to build worlds in their imaginations, and create stories for those worlds. Since I never really grew up, getting the chance to help create the new Battle Beasts in comic form has been a fantastic and supremely fun experience. The world has been turned upside down with the arrival of the Battle Beasts, and we’re going to have a great time showing just how crazy things get. IDW has a lot of experience finding riveting stories in toy-based licenses, and I hope Battle Beasts is no exception. I know for a fact that Valerio is knocking it out of the park. His art is going to floor a lot of people.”
And the excitement does not stop there — at San Diego Comic-Con (July 11-15), IDW will launch the BATTLE BEASTS series with issue #1, and DST will unveil the first full wave of Battle Beasts Minimates, which will be in stores in late fall of 2012! The first wave of two-packs will focus heavily on characters who appear in the comic, and will have a gameplay element, as well. DST will also have an exclusive two-pack of Battle Beasts for sale at the show.”
Let’s just hope that it can contain the awesomeness of that classic Hasbro animated TV commercial!
When ever we dug out Don’t Bug Me, we ignored the screen altogether and just use the little catapults to fling stuff at each other. If you his the person in the face, you got a point. I think that a company could make a fortune selling these little catapults and small pellets that you tried to plant in the kisser of your brother or sister. Who wouldn’t want a copy of Hasbro’s “Hit ’em in the Face” under the tree this upcoming holiday season?
