The Famous Five choose their own adventure

The Famous Five

I used to read a lot of books when I was younger and a lot of those books were by Enid Blyton, author of the Famous Five and Secret Seven series of stories. I loved those books but they were very linear when compared to what I discovered in 1988 – the adventure game series!

These new adventure games were essentially re-tooled Famous Five books, told as a choose-your-own-adventure story, but with added goodies like a map, dice and puzzles to solve.

The extra features of the adventure game series were just gimmicks that added little to the overall story, but their inclusion was a nice hook and the books I owned kept me entertained for a good few months.

I also owned an Asterix & Obelix book that was very similar, though those characters didn’t have the same hold over me as Julian, Dick, George, Anne and Timmy, a.k.a. the Famous Five.
