What better way to start the month long celebration of October here on the Retroist than with this 1965 TV ad for Cheerios featuring the Munsters?
In the commercial Eddie (Butch Patrick) is extolling the virtues of making Cheerios a part of your breakfast, pointing out that is the reason that Herman (Fred Gwynne) has such strength and energy to help around the house. Using clips from the 1964 series Grandpa (Al Lewis) and Lily (Yvonne De Carlo) are seen in the commercial as well!
I was treated to a nice surprise yesterday as my Wife came home from work. She had stopped by out local Target store and picked up a box of Cheerios. A smile crossed my face as I saw the Atari Activities blurb on the front of the Cheerios box!
The Activities on the back of this particular Cheerios box is a connect the dots “puzzle” featuring the icons of Centipede. The side bar says there are five activities all together and they can be found on Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs, Honey Nut Cheerios and of course Cheerios. There are also a few tasty tidbits of trivia on the back of the boxes. My Wife said that only the Cheerios had the Atari Activities on her visit…might explain why she didn’t grab me a box of Lucky Charms.
I’m not sure this is a Target exclusive as there is nothing on the box that declares this…but you might want to check your own neighborhood stores and let us know what you find!
People need to use the phrase “powerful good” more often.
Cheerios wants me to believe that after eating Cheerios I can run faster than the “New Tokaido” train? I have spent many days sitting on the couch eating nothing but Cheerios and I can hardly run to the bathroom.
