Casper is the most famous ghost on earth, but unlike his spooky brethren, he doesn’t like to haunt or scare — He spends his time looking to make friends. In the original Paramount cartoons, Casper would often frighten some unsuspecting grown-up while befriending “Little Billy” or a small animal, but he’d then rescue one of them from a perilous predicament to become a local hero. In the Harvey comics, Casper would explore an enchanted forest, while the antagonizing Ghostly Trio would tease and heckle. Friends like cousin Spooky, Wendy the Good Witch and Nightmare the Ghostly Horse round out Casper’s supporting cast.
For an iconic character, Casper the Friendly Ghost does not get nearly the right amount of attention he deserves. That is why I was very happy to find that Shout! Factory had released a wonderful collection of Casper Cartoons on DVD in their set, Casper the Friendly Ghost – The Complete Collection 1945-1963. For fans of classic Casper, this is must own. It has all 81 original Casper Cartoons that were made between 1945 and 1963 on a 3 DVD set, which alone would normally be enough to satisfy a Casper fan, but this is Shout! Factory, so they managed to throw in some wonderful extras including:
– Audio commentaries with Mark Arnold (Editor of The Harveyville Fun Times), Edmee Reit (Widow of Casper Co-creator, Seymour Reit), Voice Actor, Bradley Bolke And Alison Argrim
– Interviews with Voice Actor, Bradley Bolke, Edmee Reit and Alison Arngrim (Daughter of Norma MacMillan, the voice of Casper)
