I recently stumbled across the picture above featuring a green rabbit who seemed vaguely familiar. Whoever he was, he had something to do with S.P.A.C.E, and I was interested enough to investigate if the image was fan-art or a comic scene? A quick search later and I discovered that the ‘rabbit’ is a Hare and it’s a name I hadn’t heard in a long time – Bucky O’Hare!
In the early 90’s I remember catching occasional episodes of an animated TV show called Bucky O’Hare. At that time, I knew nothing of the history of the character, and the series didn’t gain enough traction in my life to be anything more than a footnote in my memory. Now, 25 years later, I have renewed interest in Bucky and his gang, all because one comic panel stuck out. Artist Michael Golden obviously knows how to strike a pose!
Of course, Youtube was the next stop to get a reminder about the animated series – what a theme tune!
Before the 1991 TV show, the character was star of his own comic series. ‘Bucky O’Hare and the Toad Wars‘ was featured serially within issues of Echo of Futurepast from Continuity Comics. The series was later published as a large sheet graphic novel in 1986.
Thanks to some success on TV in the UK, the character made a return to comics with 20 issues that repeated the original story before expanding to include characters from the animation. Later, in 2006, a black and white “manga” format reprint appeared in the USA to bridge the original novel and the TV show. The back of this reprint tells of Bucky and the valiant crew of the good ship Righteous Indignation battling the Toad Menace to save O’Hare’s home-world, Warren. Bucky must marshal his forces and create the greatest weapon the Aniverse has ever imagined… the Harecraft Carrier!
I would highly recommend visiting the Bucky O’Hare Info Site to learn more about the characters, the comics, the TV show, the merchandise, the video games and much more as Bucky O’Hare deserves more love. A favourite of mine is the official S.P.A.C.E. Handbook which you can read in its entirety.
