Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen - Hope Nicholson

The Spectacular Sisterhood Of Superwomen!

The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen is a 240 page tome by Hope Nicholson. While it is a fact that I have had the pleasure of reviewing some really great books lately. The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen however is not one that was sent to me. This actually came from one of my co-workers at the Arkadia Retrocade. She felt it might be a great idea to get the word out about the book. She is certainly correct on that!

In fact The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen was published on May 2nd. But I must say when my friend handed me the book this was the first I heard of it. Which is an absolute shame. Hope Nicholson has crafted a fantastic compilation of some of the most well known as well as obscure female superheroes. Adding in interesting facts and where one might be able to find the essential reading for each character.

Hope has separated the characters she has selected by decades. With an introduction for each decade explaining how the comics industry was changing. Furthermore she has provided candid commentary on the legacy of the chosen characters. As well as how many of the featured characters have been altered over the years for good or for ill. In addition Hope has selected an icon for each of the decades.

Case in point on the candid nature of Hope’s commentary. An excerpt from her entry on Wonder Woman:
“But no one knows how to define Wonder Woman – what her true essence is. She’s what we female comics readers regard as or icon of strength and power, and yet she’s slippery as water to pin down.

And really why shouldn’t that be the case? Why should identity be solid, when everybody changes? Why lock down a character to just one version? And why exactly must there be only one, single, iconic, heroic female figure in comics, when there is no one major male comic book figure?”

The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen takes a look at over 102+ female comic characters. Giving we the readers a nice history of how female heroes and characters have changed. Ranging from 1930’s Little Lulu up to Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) as the icon of the 2010s.

Of course I would be remiss to not mention how happy I was to see some of my favorite female comics characters chosen for the book. For example in the chapter for characters of the 80s, we have none other than Amanda “The Wall” Waller of Suicide Squad!

Additionally with this many characters you will discover some you’ve not heard of before. In my case I was delighted to learn of the likes of 1954’s Tomboy, 1966’s private eye Tiffany Sinn, 1985’s Sunflower, or 2013’s Bandette!

If you love comics as much as I do, seek out The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen. Hope Nicholson has really done an outstanding job with this book. It is an absolute joy to read and provides a wonderful history of female characters in comics. I certainly hope she is absolutely thrilled and proud of her work.

With Wonder Woman finally getting a movie worthy of such an icon. Perhaps The Spectacular Sisterhood of Superwomen will help to shine the spotlight on equally deserving characters?

If you are in the mood for equally engaging female heroes you might want to check out my review of Christie Golden’s fantastic Assassin’s Creed: Heresy!

Assassin's Creed: The Official Movie Novelization

Assassin’s Creed: The Official Movie Novelization

A couple of months back you might recall my posting about Ubisoft releasing a trio of Assassin’s Creed books. All timed to coincide with the debut of the Assassin’s Creed film back in December. At the time of those reviews I did not have the chance to obtain Assassin’s Creed: The Official Movie Novelization.
Assassin's Creed: The Official Movie Novelization

Thanks to the generosity of Ubisoft though – they sent me the hardcover edition of Assassin’s Creed: The Official Movie Novelization. Like the exceptional Assassin’s Creed: Heresy, this novelization was written by none other than Christie Golden!

“We work in the darkness to serve the light. We are Assassins.”

Now as you can certainly guess Assassin’s Creed: The Official Movie Novelization delivers what is advertised on the tin. In addition however like any great novelization, Christie Golden, has expanded on the story.

The plot of Assassin’s Creed: The Official Movie Novelization still follows the general outline of the film’s script. Condemned convict Callum Lynch looks to be executed for his crimes. In reality he has been transported to the Abstergo Foundation in Madrid, Spain.

Why you might well ask?

His very DNA holds the secrets to finding a piece of powerful and lost technology. Using the Animus – a machine capable of stunning virtual reality, Callum is synced with the genetic memories of his ancestor. Aguilar de Nerha – master assassin for the Spanish brotherhood and foes of the Templar Order.
I do realize I have drunk deeply of the Kool-Aid that is Assassin’s Creed. I said as much when I shared the photo of my own little shrine to the game franchise.

Krull and BB-8 aren’t actually art of Assassin’s Creed…I just have them there.

However, having said that – I will never share with you something I don’t feel is worthy of your time and money. Assassin’s Creed: The Official Movie Novelization is a solid piece of work. Perhaps if the movie franchise goes no further Ubisoft will come to a wise decision. To allow Golden to continue the adventures of the principal characters from the film?

The Assassin’s Creed: The Official Movie Novelization is out now. Moreover I suggest you pick up the hardcover edition as you will receive a nice selection of goodies. Including concept art, a code to unlock digital Assassin’s Creed rewards and behind the scenes content.

You know a bit now about Assassin’s Creed: The Official Movie Novelization. So why not listen to Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard talking about the movie and video games?

Want To Win A Copy Of Assassin’s Creed: Heresy?

You might recall a few weeks back when I posted my review of Assassin’s Creed: Heresy. The entertaining new novel by the talented Christie Golden. As well as share my love of the Assassin’s Creed series of games, I also pointed out that history – real events are what keep me coming back again and again.

Like when you are rubbing shoulders with the likes of Leonardo da Vinci. Having said that there are science fiction elements to the storyline. So you in fact won’t find yourself playing a game from the History Channel.

The folks at Ubisoft were kind enough to not send just Assassin’s Creed:Heresy for me to review. But also offer you readers a chance to win a copy of the book for yourself! Now how is that for an early gift during this Holiday Season?

You might be asking yourself what kind of feat we are going to ask you to accomplish for a chance to win?

While that would certainly be an impressive way to win. The real answer is that it is much simpler.

To be entered in the drawing for Assassin’s Creed: Heresy you must state your allegiance.

Ubisoft Releases Assassin’s Creed: Heresy And The Essential Guide!

It is fair to say that I am in love with Assassin’s Creed.

Krull and BB-8 aren't actually art of Assassin's Creed...I just have them there.

Krull and BB-8 aren’t actually part of Assassin’s Creed…I just have them there.

Ubisoft hit that sweet spot for this particular retro-loving gaming aficionado when the first title was released. That hook was History. Moreover they reeled me in with the storyline right off the bat. As a player finds themselves plunged into a war that has taken place between two powerful and secretive factions through the ages. Two orders that desire above all things…peace. They just have a very different way of achieving that goal.

The Templar Order have a viewpoint that if humanity is to know peace. It must be guided with a firm hand. So that order and reason will prevail. Of course this also means that they feel world control is a viable choice to that end. A task made easier as they’ve become a global corporate power known as Abstergo Industries.

The Assassin Brotherhood on the other hand desires to protect free will. Believing that the Templars will in fact harm humanity by attempting to shepherd it. They also have set themselves as guardians to oppose tyrants and defend the weak. Naturally this sets them on a path against the Templar Order.

In addition when these two factions cross paths it gets rather violent…quickly.

To say nothing of the fact there is a science fiction story running through the entire game series. The Assassins and Templars both covet the surviving technology of the Precursors. A lost civilization that was technologically superior to the point of being worshiped as Gods. That technology has a tendency to affect human thoughts and behavior. So you can easily see why both sides would want to claim these items.

While the series started in the Third Crusade, the 9 core game releases since have expanded the periods of history you can visit. Vastly. From the Renaissance to the October Revolution of 1917. Add to the fact you have iOS game titles, comic books as well as novels, you can see how the lore has become deep.

Which is why it is was a great idea to collect all of that lore into a handy single volume. Hence Ubisoft’s release today of Assassin’s Creed: The Essential Guide. A 216 page collection that is perfect for not just first time players but longtime fans of the series.
Assassin's Creed

It covers the historical settings in the the games, the important characters, and insider information. After browsing the book you’ll be in the know on everything from the Animus to what the true fate was of Anastasia Romanova.

Now that would certainly be reason to rush out to your local bookstore…but there is more. Much more. Ubisoft today also released Assassin’s Creed: Heresy, the brand new novel by Christie Golden.

An Author that I have a great deal of respect for to say the least. I have followed her work since back in 1991 when she penned Vampire of the Mists for Ravenloft.
ravenloft-vampire-of-the-mists

I have continued to follow her work through the World of Warcraft novels as well as Starcraft. Which is why I pretty much begged Ubisoft to allow me to share the news of her latest novel with you all.

One of the key aspects of the game series in terms of the lore has been showing that both factions, the Assassins and Templars are not wholly good or evil. Well…perhaps the Templars do tend to rank a little more on the villain scale. Which is why Golden’s new book is such a treat. It’s not told from the viewpoint of a member of the Assassin Brotherhood. We get to experience the point of view of one of the Inner Sanctum of the Templar Order. An historian by the name of Simon Hathaway, the head of Abstergo Industries’ Historical Research Division. He has taken up the task of locating the sword of none other than Joan of Arc. Which is believed to actually be a powerful Precursor artifact. Along the way he uncovers secrets about the legendary Saint of soldiers and of France as well as himself.

With the permission of Ubisoft here are some excerpts from an interview with Golden about her new Assassin’s Creed novel.
