Hmmmmmm, that's a maybe. Great not I have to remember that Aliens is the second in that series but Predators is the third. Dang it, stupid Hollywood naming of movies and junk! BTW, when are they going to make the Aliens Vs Predator movie we all want? That being Aliens vs Predators vs Colonial Marines? The comics, most of the video games and all the other media have the colonial marines and is set in roughly the Aliens time frame, not in modern day Earth! Are they afraid that such a movie would kick a little too much butt and push the limits of awsomeness?

Though it was not my first I too Amelyn loved my Sony Walkman Sportsman. There was something quite satisfying about clicking over of the black closing latch and pressing down the rubberized buttons. I have seen many pictures online of people hallowing one out to put there MP3 players in them, but I am far to lazy to insert an image.

Being another Disney flick I thought it was going to be candy cane central but much darker much more like Burton's 'classic' work. I had low expectations going in too and... perfect absolutely perfect. The design is 2nd to none the story was reworked perfectly character portrayal was so good to watch the Depp being the star of the show but that takes nothing away from the fact that Mia Wasikowska (omg so incredibly hot... sorry but she was in this) portrays the BEST and i dont jump to these things but the best Alice, not annoying at all (like some versions can be) not dim witted (like all seem to be) and not overbearing (like some actresses in her position would have been). Im gushing a bit, i know but i was really impressed.

Oh 3D work was good too.

My first walkman was a yellow Sony Sport one. I literally used it till its death. Then, I had two or three other walkmans before finally getting a discman and a second one. Then I moved to a Sony's 512 MB MP3 player (which was a real piece of cr*p) before finally getting an 80GB iPod.

Kill Screen 256:
The über lounge spectrum has at its heart Les Baxter, Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman, I'm positive.

Anything by these guys makes you instantly grow a tiki hut somewhere around you.
Albums are out-of-print, for the most part, so a quick google search with the word 'blog' will take you to magical spots where you can sip the waters of exotica.
Titles like Exotica, Quiet Village, Space Escapade and Pearly Shells contribute to the lounge atmosphere (and have tunes in the Bachelor Lounge compilations).

These are more 50s than 30s, for sure. So apologies for the slight thread-jacking.
But still great sounds from the suave set.

One last thing - a great 90s instrumental album is Tipsy's Trip Tease - a collage of lounge samples in catchy numbers.
Look up "Space Golf" on YouTube, you might've heard it before.

My first portable music apparatus was a tape machine component that plugged into (and out of) a three cassette tape and radio combo.
Wasn't the best quality, had four buttons, ate batteries and tapes when the heads got dirty.
But having that wunnerful portable music device meant hours of perfect bike rides. It meant contemplating the creation of perfect ride tapes, school tapes, lazy sunday tapes and cool tapes meant for sharing.

I grew a deeper appreciation for the pool of vinyls at my house (and all my 45s).
Add to that the spelunking of radio specials and the oh-so-patient radio hunt for The Song - waiting to capture a version where the DJ speech didn't sully the recognized start of the sought-after tune.

Ah good times.
Still better off today, though, in that song-hunt regard.

It's December 31st, 1989. You need to contribute to the creation of a time capsule that will contain 80s memorabilia. Your assignment is to create a mix tape that you feel best embodies the 1980s. One catch... you only have one 60 minute cassette (30 min on each side).

So which songs would you choose for the cassette?

To make it a little easier than trying to add up the minutes, pick 10-12 songs.

My list:

1. Beat It - Michael Jackson
2. Don't Stop Believing - Journey
3. Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics
4. Feel the Noize - Quiet Riot (Yep, it's a cover of a 70s song, but it's fun)
5. Broken Wings - Mr Mister
6. Addicted to Love - Robert Palmer
7. Everybody Have Fun Tonight - Wang Chung
8. Boys of Summer - Don Henley
9. Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners
10. Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode
11. Sailing - Christopher Cross
12. Wicked Game - Chris Isaak

As I mentioned in another thread, I feel Fast Times was the chronological first of what we'd call "80s movies". I think just that alone warrants it to be remembered but there's more to it.

The story is a bit lacking, but the scenes are pretty hilarious. I'm not sure if the casting was well-planned or it was pure luck, but either way I think it's the best thing about this movie.

If I were to guess about why The Retroist finds this film better than the later teen films, it's because the 80s teen genre formula wasn't completed. John Hughes would be the one to set the formula in stone.

There are threads which identify the more recent and obscure media players, but I wanted to start a discussion highlighting the Sony Walkman. I'm sure many, if not all, of us who grew up during the 80s and 90s had a Walkman or it's sister product the DiscMan.

This device paved the way for all personal media players including the Nintendo Game Boy and the Apple iPod. For instance, the original Walkman included two head phone jacks (not a head phone jack + auxiliary jack). Sony's designers felt a person using a Walkman in a public setting would be considered rude unless he or she shared with at least one other person. This was dropped in the next version.

So did you have a cassette Walkman? A discman? Or were you like me and got the inexpensive radio-only Walkman?

My guess is that he's one of the unfortunate people who got bundled into the "music my parents listen" artist list. There are tons of other artists who have cross-generational appeal, but perhaps he wasn't able to pull that off.

He remains popular with the younger baby boomers for his solo work and the stuff he did with Genesis. The local smooth jazz station here likes to play a recent remixed version of "in the air tonight" often.

Yeah, Amelyn is right. Bought one of these RCA-to-Coaxial adapters from what used to be Radio Shack (is now La Source here in Canada) and it works.

(Fun anecdote: Asked two clerks in this tiny La Source store about an RCA-to-Coaxial adapter, one said they didn't know and promptly disappeared, another said immediately 'we don't have that, sir' and stood there smiling. So I looked for about a minute and found one)

Sound, image and funtimes instantly converted for immediate, no-screwdriver-in-the-back-of-the-TV retrogaming experience.

Love it.

I've been playing some Halo 2 recently in light of the announcement. It will be a sad day when I can no longer pwn at that game.

By the way, I noticed right after I was playing that microsoft added 400 MS points and like 3 free months of xbox live to my account, with an apology for the impending shutdown. It might have been for everyone, but if you didn't get that you should fire up an old game, play on line, and see if you get the same prize.

According to the Nerd, this is THE thing to get:

Well, friends...last week I was able to convince my grandmother to let me tear into the closet so I could raid some of the gaming systems.

The problem I, rather embarrassingly, have come upon is how to hook up my Intellivison system to my television. I recall their being an adapter of sorts that use to connect to the back of the set.

Any suggestions?

I did quite like this one. Which is not to say it's flawless, and it isn't Burton at his most Burton-y. Disney holding him back maybe? I dunno. The 3D was fine, but it's not really necessary to see it in 3D if you don't wanna. It's pretty good, all things considered. The Queen of Hearts is quite fun (think the Queen from Balckadder series 2). Depp was excellent, as always. It does seem oddly rushed in places and yet meanders somewhat as well. Regardless, I say it's not a bad choice if no retro movies are showing!

I am a long-time Burton fan, but I was underwhelmed by this. I certainly didn't go in with high expectations, which I thought would play in the movie's favor and my reaction to it. Unfortunately, it just didn't resonate with me like some of his past work has.

Bottom line, it wasn't a bad movie by any stretch, it just wasn't my favorite Burton movie.

Well nothing really to add, Mooncity and Atari Adventure Square have covered everything.

I just want to add my two cents and say that this show is indeed one of the best ever made.

@mooncity Don't forget the two Iron Maiden songs about #6, The Prisoner and Back in the Village. :)
