The Magnificent Montague was an NBC radio show that aired for only one season – beginning on November of 1950 and lasting until 1951. This was a time when the big three corporations such as ABC, CBS, and of course NBC were making sure that they were putting in money for quality old time radio shows, so they could be sure if audiences were not watching their TV programming they were listening to their radio shows!
Which is how The Magnificent Montague came to have it’s star, the stage and film thespian Monty Woolley!
So what is this OTR show about?
The Magnificent Montague concerns an aging and down on his luck Shakespearean actor named Edwin Montague who thanks to his Wife lands a role on a radio soap opera entitled Uncle Goodheart. Not that Montague is appreciative of this effort – not by a long shot. In our episode today entitled Shakespeare in the Park we join Edwin as he has been invited to perform for the “Cultural Division of the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts”…the comedy comes about when he ends up at Ebbets Field!

I know that voice!
Besides the talent of Monty Woolley as The Magnificent Montague – the cast also featured future co-star of The Honeymooners Art Carney and the legendary announcer Don Pardo. Who you might recognize from his work on TV’s Jeopardy, Wheel of Fortune, The Price is Right, and Saturday Night Live to name a few of the shows he had been affiliated with. In fact why not listen to the man himself in this interview from TV Legends about the night that Darrell Hammond filled in for him on SNL!
