The first real time that I was able to watch MTV was at a neighbors house, it was for the World premiere of Michael Jackson’s Thriller. The friends of my Father knew of my rather rabid love of all things horror and their older children suggested making it something of a party. So that is how on December 2, 1983 I found myself viewing my first music video and MTV all at the same time.
I’ve mentioned before music wasn’t really a big part of my life when growing up, not that it was forbidden or anything like that…it just wasn’t something my Father and I did. It really wasn’t until 1986 when I stared watching Nick Rocks and Night Tracks that the music bug bit and thankfully by that time our local cable was offering MTV as part of it’s basic channel line up. But by that point I had missed out on awesome ads with the likes of the late great David Bowie as well as Cyndi Lauper…who I had such a wicked crush on.
Thankfully those of us that missed out on such ads back in the day can enjoy them now with the aid of YouTube.
