Those of us fortunate enough to grow up in the late 70’s and early 80’s probably have very fond memories of very carefully looking at the TV guides when they happen to announce the new Saturday Morning cartoon line up for the season. We also looked forward to the specials that CBS, ABC, and NBC would normally air the Friday evening before the new and returning animated shows were scheduled to air, where we could get our first glimpse at what was in store.
That is exactly what the 1st Annual Yummy Awards was back in 1983 on NBC although very much being a Saturday Morning Preview it was totally dressed up to appear as an awards ceremony hosted by the likes of then Silver Spoons star Ricky Schroder as well as the A-Team’s Dwight Schultz.
In this video uploaded by Wish It Was 1984 you will find there are a plethora of guest stars like Justine Bateman, 1950’s children show host Pinky Lee, Lassie, Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, Bozo the Clown, Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Shirt Tales as well as…
The Incredible Hulk
Kim Fields and Papa Smurf
Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends (The Ol’ Web Head shows up just a bit late)
HOLY COW! Ookla the Mok, Princess Ariel, and Thundarr the Barbarian!!!
To be honest and I am not sure why but I’ve never seen this particular Saturday Morning Preview before until this morning. I about fell out of my chair when I saw the live action versions of Thundarr and the crew…the show is worth it for just that. But as an added surprise it seems that Wish It Was 1984 has also added an episode of CBS’ Saturday Supercade!
