By the time that HBO began airing the Tales from the Crypt on June 10, 1985 we fans of horror anthology programs already had the likes of Tales from the Darkside, Freddy’s Nightmares, Monsters, and of course the 1985 to 1989 Twilight Zone revival series.
When Tales from the Crypt came onto the scene though it was pretty amazing, thanks of course to being a premium cable channel it was allowed to up the ante with it’s gore and violence, so they could bring updated stories of those wonderful EC Comic without obviously worrying about the censors.
Of course it didn’t hurt the series by having a charismatic host like the Cryptkeeper, he certainly had a bit more…menace…to him in those beginning episodes. He would still lay down those awesome puns but he was a ways off from being embraced as a character in an animated series at that point.
Thanks to Rafael R Soriano‘s YouTube page you can watch the promo that got everyone talking about the then upcoming Tales from the Crypt series.
