In the 1984 Summer Olympics Mary Lou Retton walked away with the gold in gymnastics and America’s heart. As soon as this diminutive champ stepped off the gym mat, she was everywhere, doing ads and being interviewed. This national commercial for the Energizer battery ran all the time on television and was probably what I most associated her with post-Olympics. Not many people know this but eighties scientists quickly determined that you could power a small city with the bundle of energy that was Mary Lou Retton.
