We Need More Stop-Motion King Kong In Car Commercials!

The photo you see above features the late great David Allen (Equinox, The Stuff) checking out his stop-motion animation model of King Kong that he used for this 1972 Volkswagen television commercial.

This commercial was aired only once on network TV, even though it was well received the executives at Volkswagen demanded it be pulled as they didn’t feel a commercial showing an ape driving one of their cars was appropriate.

Even though I had never had the pleasure of seeing this King Kong ad before this morning it did remind me of one of the commercials in Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 Robocop.

While VW’s is great, I must admit that I still prefer the 6000 SUX. (An Oldsmobile, Cutlass body I believe).
