I guess I laughed at Sonny just as much as the next kid when I was younger. Now though, when I watch old commercials featuring this animated bird, all I see is a tortured soul trying to find a moment of solace before the dark brown cocoa monkey climbs up on his back.
You would figure this would be a snap, just avoid the cereal, but despite Sonny’s best efforts, he is foiled time and again by smug children who only seem to exist only to tempt him to eat this delicious chocolate cereal. I can picture him after this cocoa-binge, running away from these kids and hitting the road hoping the next job he lands or town he visits will be obscure enough to duck those who want to make him go cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs. Just imagine after each commercial a lonely brown bird hitching down a dusty road with the Incredible Hulks’s Lonely Man theme playing.
Truly Sonny is one of the more tragic figures of late 20th century advertising…
