I wonder what year cologne and perfume advertising peaked? Based on the retro commercial I have watched over the year, I would have to say the Seventies. They just seemed to try harder back then. For example, this ad for British Sterling. Snowy and Christmasy with that just a slightly over the top American-friendly Britishness. It’s like James Bond walked into a romance novel on the set of Doctor Zhivago.
I have seen many of these British Sterling Cologne bottles with engravings at garage sales over the years. I wonder how many of those engravings were inspired by this ad?
