The Star Wars Patrol Dewback Commercial…With Ricky Schroder?!

Now when I normally think of Ricky Schroder I generally recall his role as Ricky Stratton from the hit TV series ‘Silver Spoons’ that ran on NBC from 1982 to 1987. What I wasn’t aware until this very week is that he also was featured in this commercial for the Star Wars Patrol Dewback toy that aired back in February of 1980.

I’m pretty sure that I received my own Dewback toy the same Christmas morning that I was gifted the Death Star playset! Though the Dewback wasn’t featured in the original Star Wars film (Episode IV) it most certainly was featured in the Star Wars Storybook that I ordered from the Scholastic Book Club!

I can remember remember having long talks with my Father about the Dewback and why it wasn’t in the film…but my most vivid memory of the toy is when I was spending the night over at my Grandparents with my Cousin Brandon and for some reason we decided it would be hilarious if we filled the toy with Popcorn seeds. Why? I still do not know the answer to that but I was still finding seeds falling out of that Dewback well after Return of the Jedi had been released to the theaters.

The other kid in the ad sounds like the neighbor kid Julius (played by Walter Tetley) on the Phil Harris / Alice Faye radio show
