In this commercial from the mid-1980s for Fruit Corners’ Fruit Bars, they try to lean into the attractiveness of a pressed fruit bar and tell consumers what to expect when they opened one up. It is a clever direction to take, although I can’t say I ever found the Fruit Bars all that ugly. It was only after seeing this ad that I started to associate the brand with ugliness. So…good job??
The way they pitch their product might be interesting, but it is not the greatest thing in this commercial. No, for a DEVO fan like myself, the real magic happens at the 28 second mark when 3 kids dressed in DEVO-esque clothing do a robot comic bit about the bars now being easier to chew.
Are they not Fruit Bars?!
