I want my VH1!

I always think of VH1 as a 1990s channel, since that is when it really seemed to start catching on, but the channel is bit older than that. It got its start on January 1, 1985 and started with the same mission as the then very popular MTV, but with an emphasis on a slightly older crowd who liked lighter music. They even ran an ad campaign similar to MTV’s with music stars crowing about the channel and telling people to ask their cable provider to add the station.

This ad, which features the likes of Kenny Rogers, Melissa Manchester, Smokey Robinson, Olivia Newton-John and Stevie Wonder. It gives you an idea of what music you could expect to hear on VH1 during its inaugural year.

People are now, “Hello cable operator, please take off VH1. We want something else. Take it off please!”
