The Royal Family, as seen in Spitting Image

Spitting Image Royals

Lots of people in this big old world of ours know who the British Royal Family are but I bet few of them know about how they were portrayed by British satire Spitting Image in the 80’s and 90’s.

Spitting Image was a very British and very funny weekly puppet show intended to be watched by adults. Its bread and butter was highlighting the absurdity of politicians but it often took aim at celebrities and The Royals too. I’m especially fond of the Spitting Image Queen and always think of this caricature whenever Her Royal Highness is brought up in conversation. Here are a few of her finest moments…

You could always rely on Spitting Image to do something as silly as sending HRH on a visit to a toilet factory!

  1. btsierra says:

Well this explains a lot about Genesis’s video for “Land of Confusion”.

  2. I’d forgotten that Genesis hired the Spitting Image crew for one of their videos! Thanks for the reminder btsierra, I think I’ll write a post about it. And thanks batfan, I hadn’t heard of DC Follies but I plan to have a primer on my lunch break. Wikipedia states that it took inspiration from Spitting Image!
