I loved Mighty Mouse when I was younger, and would recite his “Here I Come To Save The Daaaaaayyy..!” catchphrase often, much to the annoyance of those around me. My love of the character is based on re-runs of the original theatrical films which I would watch on a Saturday afternoon, and I’ve never known anything different for the miniature super hero.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the show was resurrected, not once but twice and I’ve never watched either incarnation. Between 1979 and 1981, Filmation produced 48 episodes of The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse and Heckle & Jeckle. If this episode, entitled Catula, is anything to go by, the show stuck to the expected formula:
The 1987 version of the show, from animator Ralph Bakshi, was an entirely different beast. Much more off-beat than previous efforts and all the better for it. I love the origin story in the second half, aping Superman’s origin perfectly.
Sadly, this later update lasted only 18 episodes though a 10-issue comic series did follow in 1990 to continue the story.
