Retroist Podcast – Episode 168 – Atari 7800

On today’s show I start off by talking about how my Atari buddy and I kept waiting for the Atari 7800 and how a love for Atari turned him against Nintendo and into the arms of Sega. Then I talk about the Atari 7800 console. I talk about its development, release, re-release, the company who made it, the people who bought that company, the peripherals, the games and much more.

Music on the show was provided by Peachy (the Jack Tramiel of Wales), if you have musical needs, why not contact Peachy at peachy@retroist.com. And “like” him on his Facebook Page.

  1. Dragged my heals long enough on this one, although not long enough to pronounce Tramiel correctly :P

Hopefully some people might feel inspired to check out the 7800 after this overview.

Loved the episode, but I did a double take on that picture. The kid is supposed to be playing a 7800, but the graphics on the screen are for Jungle Hunt which was never released on the 7800. There isn’t even a prototype for a 7800 version of Jungle Hunt. Locating the commercial on Youtube does indeed show that he is playing Jungle Hunt in a 7800 commercial. Atari did make it for the 2600 (not the version shown) and the 5200/8-bit computers(which does look like what is shown). I wonder if Atari got their commercial shoots mixed up and instead showed a game for the XEGS by mistake.
