RIP Rik Mayall

Rik Mayall

On June 9th 2014, a great English comedian was taken from us. A man who, thanks to his performances in shows such as The Young Ones and Bottom, was instrumental in shaping my sense of humour as a young boy. His energetic, alternative and often surreal blend of comedy will always be with me, forever informing my own comedic pursuits and leaving me with the profound knowledge that frying pans will always be funny.

I think his partner in crime Ade Edmondson had the best final words to say about Rik Mayall:

There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he’s died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard.

I can only add that Rik was truly a comedy genius and will be sorely missed by a great many people. Rest in peace.

Ade’s quote is just perfect. So sad to hear of Rik’s passing– my best friend and I would stay up late and watch Young Ones and Bottom on YTV back in the day. Love how well it holds up. True talent, right there!
