I tried to build models when I was a kid, but I was always horrible at it. Even when my family bought me the snap together ones, I could always figure out ways to make it not snap together. While I wasn’t skilled with them, I had a friend who was something of a model genius. Give him some glue, paint and plastic pieces and he could always put it together, even without instructions.
His bedroom was a museum of all the great models he had put together and I always admired them when I went to his house to play electric football. He was really into cars and I especially enjoyed his Dukes of Hazzard vehicles like the ones in this MPC Model ad.
When we became teenagers his attitude towards his models completely shifted and instead of becoming items of veneration and honor, they were things to which he would strap firecrackers. I am not sure what changed when those teen hormones kicked in, but it always hurt me to see him mistreat these wonderful labors of love.
