Tom Jones’ 1994 not-quite-a-hit comeback song, “If I Only Knew”

My hometown had this tiny local TV station that was forever in the process of affiliating or de-affiliating with an ultimately doomed minor broadcast network. DuMont, Paramount, the Prime Time Entertainment Network, this channel was always where to find those stations, when you could find those stations. Of course, this station signed up to be an affiliate with The WB in mid-1994 with much fanfare and “The WB…coming soon!” teaser spots. The problem was that The WB didn’t go live until 1995, and this channel cleared the away far too early. For six months, this channel had nothing to run except reruns of Saved By the Bell the College Years—for which there are a mere 19 episodes. They subsequently couldn’t get much advertising either, so every half hour would consist of a Saved By the Bell, some WB teasers, dead air, and then—at the end of literally every half hour—the video for Tom Jones’ 1994 not-quite-a-hit comeback song, “If I Only Knew.”

  1. I don’t know what is more entertaining, Tom’s stiff a as a board dance “moves”, the oh-so-90’s Dude-Bro and his in yer face ‘tude (although that “Pervert” hat is aces), or maybe it’s Tom’s periodic belting of “Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh”…
