Whenever I write for The Retroist, I usually assume that someone has already written about the thing that I want to write about. So I was shocked to discover that nobody has written about Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds. Yes, you’ve read that correctly, DOG-tan-ian and the Three Musker-HOUNDS!
This early 80’s animated show has been on my mind a lot lately thanks to the recent BBC production of The Musketeers. In fact, whenever I see a reference to d’Artagnan or his three French friends, my mind involuntarily starts to sing the theme to its canine counterpart. It’s probably best you watch a little of the video below, you’ll soon understand…
Still with me? One for all and all for one, Muskerhounds are always ready…
The original series was created in 1981 as a joint collaboration between BRB Internacional of Spain and Japanese studio Nippon Animation. In 1985, the 26 episode series was dubbed into English and played out on British TV for what seemed like years. A second 26 episode series, The Return of Dogtanian, was produced in 1989, this time created from a partnership between Taiwanese studio Wang Film Productions and British television company, Thames Television.
The excellent Wikipedia article mentions a possible CGI movie for 2014 which could be interesting!
For more about the show, have a browse of the Muskerhounds.com website – especially the Merchandise page which has a very nice sword that I’d like to own. En garde!
