Sing, Celebrate! The King Dream Chorus perform “King Holiday”

king-dream-chorus

In 1986 a slew of hip-hop and R&B artists got together to sing an anthem to Martin Luther King, Jr. The video, introduced by King’s son, after he answers some brief questions from school children, features Run-DMC, Whodini, Menudo, New Edition, and Whitney Houston (in her finest après ski wear), among others. And closes with some of King’s moving “I have a dream” speech.

If you can believe it, January 20, 1986 was the FIRST time Martin Luther King Jr. Day was recognized as a holiday and (for the most part) nationally celebrated.

It's all just pops and clicks within the vinyl groove I'm listening to. Music, movies, commercials, action figures, cassette tapes...anything that you left in your parents' attic when you moved. I want to talk about it.
