When you’re serious about tennis – Penn is the ball you’ll play

Penn Tennis Balls

I’m quite a keen tennis player, not a particularly good one, but I’m someone who plays regularly and pays attention to the equipment I need to play competitively.

This got me thinking, it’s all very well playing with a modern racquet and fancy extra bounce tennis balls but what if I’d been born a little earlier?

Which brings us to the two July 1978 commercials below. Both from the exact month I was born.

I love the bionic ball in the Penn commercial but, for me, Wilson’s effort featuring the Jack Kramer Autograph wooden model and “We’re not number one for nothing” slogan makes for better viewing.

Interestingly, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tennis equipment commercial on British TV, and this might count as the first ever tennis post on this site!

  1. Thanks for posting this! Being born in ’74, and devoting a good deal of my life in the 80s-early 90s to tennis, this is great to see.
