For the past 20 years I’ve had a strange fascination with the music of Louis Prima. It isn’t music I grew up, and I don’t have a great longing to listen to other jazz, swing or “rat pack” artists, but in my late teens I heard Prima’s “Angelina” and was instantly hooked.
I attribute this fondness to his incredible charisma that you can see and hear with every performance. This spot singing ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ on the Ed Sullivan Show with then-wife Keely Smith hints at the chemistry the two had. I was amazed to learn that they divorced a year after this recording!
For more of the pair, check out the superb performance below of ‘Just a Gigolo & I Ain’t Got Nobody’ in which Prima has the time of his life and Smith plays the part of disinterested love interest perfectly.
