Once a month, when I was a kid, I liked to throw what my mother called our “fancy party”. This usually happened on a Sunday night and involved me spending an hour putting together what I considered fancy finger foods on plates and serving them on the coffee table in the living room while we watched family friendly programming.
Oh the things I would, like the cut up pickles arranged carefully with slices of other “found” vegetables or the worlds smallest cold cut platter made from a meat and individually wrapped american cheese slices that I had unsheathed. Each of them, my mother would taste and rate with zero honesty. According to her, I was the host with the most and the pièce de résistance were my carefully decorated Ritz crackers. Almost all animal themed, they brought levity to what might have been a stuffy affair and had the bonus of being the most edible thing on the table.
I never got as good as the ones pictured in this Ritz ad, but I am pretty sure it was an ad like this that inspired my creativity.
