This is definitely the retroyist of retro fast food places. I also miss Burger Chef.

  2. The secret to Burger Chef (and why I preferred them to McDonald’s and Burger King) is that the burgers were (a) chain broiled, and (b) seasoned with salt and pepper before grilling. Much better tasting than the other guys.

Burger Chef was bought out by the company that owns Hardee’s and all the restaurants were either converted or shut down. Every ten years or so one Hardee’s restaurant in the nation rebrands and brings out the old menu solely to keep the trademarks alive. It’s sad.

I only went to Burger Chef a few times. I lived in a small town/rural setting that had no fast food chains. Going to any one of them was a rare treat for me. But I do remember that Burger Chef was my favorite, mainly because of the Fun Meal (I assumed that McDonald’s came up with the Happy Meal to compete with it). And I remember the Star Wars posters. Seems like every boy I knew at the time had at least one of those in his room. I had the Luke Skywalker one.
In ’79 or ’80, I recall Burger Chef introducing the “Top Chef,” a cheeseburger with bacon on it. That was the first time I had ever heard of that concept.
