Retroist John Carpenters The Thing Podcast

Welcome to the Retroist John Carpenters The Thing Podcast. On today’s show we talk all about the horror sci-fi classic, John Carpenter’s The Thing. We talk about the cast, the plot, the people behind the camera and much much more. Vic Sage is back with a new Why Should I Know This Person. This week Vic covers Wilfred Brimley.

I have been meaning to get this episode up on the site for a while, so I am very happy to be able to get it up before Halloween.

Another fine show, just in time for the spooky season.
The detailed look into the movie’s hinted-at mysteries is indeed what keeps me coming back, year after year (besides the fine actors, that tense music, the claustrophobic horror, that hat!, the smart script, the ahead-of-their-time ferociously-effective effects, etc.)

Yeah, someone on Reddit had posted how Macready was
the sole survivor because he tested Childs by offering him
gasoline in that last shared-bottle scene
(notice he doesn’t drink it himself).
And Thing creatures can’t tell the difference.

I dunno about that. But lotsa things about The Thing are too good and must be revisited regularly.

And I also dunno about the burnt body, but I love how it sets up the viewer notion of important events happening off-screen and the movie becomes a little more unsettling because of it.
