The Coneheads Animated Special (1983)

The Coneheads - Rankin and Bass

First of all I want to give a big thanks to fellow Retroist writer Daniel XIII for taking a moment to cease consuming mass quantities to give me the heads up on this Rankin and Bass 1983 animated special. Until the Ouija Board Kid pointed it out to me I can honestly say I never knew this special even existed!

The Special features all three original Saturday Night Live actors voicing the characters they made popular back in 1977, with Dan Aykroyd playing Beldar, Jane Curtain as Prymaat, and Laraine Newman as Connie. The Coneheads animated special was in fact a pilot episode that was passed on, seems like it was intended for a prime time audience judging by the humor.

So was I just locked in a closet when this special aired? Does anyone else remember watching it back in the day?

  1. I saw it back in the day & liked it. When the movie came out a decade later, I was expecting more of the animated version (I was unfamiliar with the SNL version, as I had never been a fan of SNL & I’m not even certain whether or not I was even aware of SNL back in ’83).
I believe the special only aired once though (certainly no more than 2 or 3 times at the most), so it’s easy to have overlooked.

  2. I saw it when it first aired back in 1983. I thought it was great. I was also a big (if young) SNL fan. I was disappointed that the Coneheads cartoon never got made into a series.

  3. This didn’t air in Philadelphia, if I remember, but I caught it off an old roof antenna hooked up to my old black and white set in my bedroom off of WNUV in Baltimore!

  4. I find this very interesting. Does anyone know if NBC officially aired this special or is it perhaps something that Rankin and Bass put into syndication during the Halloween season like Daniel XIII mentioned?

  5. Mike says:

I have this one on tape from back in about 1985 or so. It was the second half of a Halloween special on Channel 45 in Baltimore, host by Captain Chesapeake. The other half was the wonderful “Witch’s Night Out”.

  6. Steve says:

What a fantastic DailyMotion page that user has! Looks like about 100 unreleased/unaired pilots from classic TV shows.

  7. Atari Adventure Square says:

    Wow, what a treat!
This pilot flew over my head and back to the moons of Meepzork before I got a chance to see it.

Love my old SNL TV friends and this video is like a visit back to that comfy living room where we all congregated (in both fleshy and tubey form).

    Thanks Vic!
