Pre-Film Homemade Darth Vader and Stormtrooper Costumes

According to the poster of this photo, Phil Dillon, this photo and the costume were taken BEFORE the release of Star Wars by these kid’s Father. That is some amazing! To have looked at the pre-release stuff before the movie and to make helmets out of boxes…just…amazing.

  1. HOLY COW that’s awesome!
    Pre-fandom cosplay!
And all that off the pre-release material before the film was out!
I remember seeing the first commercials on TV long before anything else was out about the film and it just sparked my 9 year old imagination.
I had all these pre-conceived ideas over what the plot was and who was what- I had a whole thing that the Jawas were helping the good guys to sneak in somewhere and that the robot they shot (R2D2) was some kind of patroling sentry.
Luckily I was all squared away on the who-is and what-is before i saw the movie for the first time (one of 7 viewings over that glorious Summer of ’77!) and , no matter what my childhood imagination came up with, the original film did not disappoint!

Yeah, I feel I’m looking at the pre-history of Comic-Con.
    Lucky kids!

Reading your comment, RetroArt, reminds me how the characters filled my mind back in that golden 77-78 period of Star-Wars-Mania.
I loved spinning fables in my head with all the cast and weird races and bots and ships and no-moons.

That first one was pure magic.
