Remember when your glass Soda Pop Bottle came wrapped in Styrofoam?

I have heard that Styrofoam is bad for the environment. Which is shame, because I cannot tell you how much joy I would take in peeling the labels off these soda bottles when I was younger. I have tried to do the same with the current generation of plastic bottles, but it just ain’t the same. So if any scientists are reading this, please figure out a safe and satisfying alternative for soda bottle labels.

  1. LOL! That was my first thought when I saw the headline of this post!
“Boy do I miss peeling the label off soda bottles…”
The game was to start the tear at the top and see how long a continuous, curly peel you can do- sort of like peeling an apple.
The best is having a complete bottle label peeled off that way.
That just reminds me of Summer time fritted away as only kids can do on things like this. Awesome.

If you slid the label down so about half of it was off, you could ‘pop’ the label by slamming it into the palm of your other hand. I was not a peeler; I preferred popping.

Totally loved both peeling and popping. I had a friend who could pop one so loud that it sounded like a gunshot!

  4. And don’t forget about those twistable metal bottle caps. I recall flanging out those little metal tabs along the perimeter (look atbthe picture above to see what I’m talking about). The bottle caps end up looking like razor- edged flying saucer ships! That, or a miniature flying guillotine of death (wonder how many get that ref?!).

  5. Great post! I was thinking about these bottle a while back and for the life of me, couldn’t remember when things switched over to plastic.

I remember many family road trips, sitting in the back seat, having finished my Orange Sunkist and trying to peel off the styrofoam cuff all in one piece (like peeling an orange). I also remember breaking off the metal tabs and flicking them at my sister.

I remember and miss the peeling and popping. Don’t know what made me think of that this morning but its cool to see here there were other kids doing it also. It’s been a while since we did this.
