1982 “Little Boy” Atari 2600 TV Commercial

Atari - Little Boy - TV Commercial
As a person that finds himself humming the “Have You Played Atari Today?” theme on an almost daily basis it shouldn’t surprise anyone that I look back at these Atari TV commercials with a wistful smile on my face.

The real question is which do you prefer? The live action commercial or the animated one?

Pay close attention to the :17 mark on the animated TV commercial. Are they using puppetry for the Breakout sequence, or possibly stop motion?

  1. GammaDev says:

The second one isn’t an animated commercial, it’s an animatic. It’s what the company doing to the commercials puts together to get approval before shooting the commercials on film with actors (which is the most expensive part). They take the storyboards, film them in the correct order and timing, and lay down a temporary sound track. It looks like the “Breakout” part was just down with construction paper on the animation stand.

  2. The first pic looks rather more like he is finalizing his evil plans to conquer the planet than playing Atari. Or at least devising a fiendish plan to kill Spidey.
