Gabe Kaplan Does Stand Up on the Midnight Special

You might be familiar with Gabe Kaplan from his work on Welcome Back, Kotter, but did you know before that he was a stand-up comedian? Kaplan hones his craft throughout the 1960s and by the 1970s he was at the top of his game. In fact, it is from his comedy that a lot of what would become that memorable sitcom would be pulled. Here is Gabe, appearing on the Midnight Special in 1976.

    Great find!

He did the Ling Chao joke on Welcome Back, Kotter. That opening gambit he would do where he’s talking about a relative, usually to his wife, was mainly his stand-up material worked into the show.

  2. I have to be honest and say I wasn’t a huge watcher of Welcome Back Kotter but as of late I’ve been watching Battle of the Network Stars where he is really funny. I’ll have to give this a watch.

  3. Yeah Conrad was intense and that fake laugh of his was odd, but it was people who took Battle so seriously that made it so good. That is why later seasons are “meh”, compared to the Conrad, Crystal and McNichol seasons.
