Walter Hill’s grimy gangland retelling of the Anabasis of Xenophon is one of my favorite movies off all time. My favorite character, if you can call it that, is the almost dystopian version of late 70’s New York that the tale is set in. Dirty water in the streets, rampant gang violence and ubiquitous graffiti paint a depressing picture of the Big Apple. If you agree, you should check out this extensive scouting report of virtually every location shot in the film. I was particularly amazed that some of the graffiti from 1979 is still visible today.

One of the best action films of my youth, and I still get a huge thrill out of running along with the gang even today.
These stills invoke unique vacation ideas: Go ’round the city in a homespun vest; have pics taken at these locations for posterity and lobby cards; invite a Fury or two for boppin’.
I can dig this post.
