Superman Lunchbox

Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… my lunch!

This metal lunchbox, made in 1978, was released in conjunction with Superman: The Movie, released that same year. You can tell that most of the characters on the lunchbox look like their movie counterparts. That’s obviously Christopher Reeve as Superman and Clark Kent, Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, and Jackie Cooper as Perry White, Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Planet. Jimmy Olsen, on the other hand, barely resembles Marc McClure, the actor who portrayed him in the film. I wonder if the person who designed the lunchbox put himself in place of Jimmy Olsen and hoped nobody would notice.

Occasionally I have difficulty in deciding which side of a lunchbox I’m going to display on my shelf, but this one’s a no brainer. If I have to choose whether to look at a meeting at the Daily Planet or the Man of Steel flying… Up, Up and Away!

  1. I had this lunchbox for my first few years of school. I’d look at all the sides and get lost in imagination as as I ate whatever it was that was packed between the slices of Wonderbread. I can’t imagine the office scene held my interest too long.

I still have mine with the Thermos. It’s sitting on my shelf of Superman items. It’s the only lunchbox I have that is still in displayable condition.

I just found a Superman lunch box recently at the local Goodwill store. It’s plastic and black with the comic book looking character on the front. Also made by Thermos. I am not sure what era the box was made though.
