The greatest joy of writing for the Retroist is when you stumble across something awesome that you never knew existed and can share it with others to see if they have any recollection of the item! Like this ‘How The West Was Won’ lunch box and thermos pictured above that was inspired by the 1976 TV mini-series that would become a regular series for two seasons on the ABC network in 1978 and 1979. The series was loosely based on the Cinerama film of the same name from back in 1962.
The TV series starred James Arness (The Thing From Another World, Gunsmoke), Bruce Boxleitner (Tron, Scarecrow and Mrs. King), Richard Kiley (Blackboard Jungle, Night Gallery), Fionnula Flanagan (The Ewok Adventure), Eva Marie Saint (On the Waterfront, North By Northwest), and Harris Yulin (Scarface, Ghostbusters II).
As a young boy I would not have wanted to carry this particular lunch box with me to school and I speak as a kid who did have the Waltons lunch box…but as an adult I have to say I am captivated by the artwork for it, I mean that is a beautiful painting. I guess I’ll have to keep my eyes open on eBay for one of these to pop up!
