Growing up in New Jersey, my picture of the outside world was shaped by what I saw in movies, TV and books. I would eventually come to live in San Francisco and went on a tour of Alcatraz more than once while there. Before that, my entire vision of “The Rock” was shaped by one film, “Escape from Alcatraz”. It must have been a popular Sunday Afternoon movie, because I remember watching it a few times and I cannot think of another place I would have seen it.
If you do have the opportunity to take a tour of Alcatraz, I suggest you do it at night. iT is magical.
