Rest in Peace – The Passing of Paul Bearer (Bill Moody)

Paul_Bearer

Usually I enjoy these short looks at wrestling icons, but today in not the case. Yesterday, March 5th, 2013, Bill Moody, better known to fans worldwide as Paul Bearer, passed at the age of 58. The longtime manager of The Undertaker, he also managed Rick Rude, Steve Austin, Mankind, Kane, Lex Luger, and the Ultimate Warrior. He was greatly respected in the business, both for his accumen, and more importantly, for his good nature and attitude behind the curtain.

Originally he was a ringside photographer, and then began managing in the South as Percy Pringle III. After the birth of his first son in 1979, he decided to leave the business and trained as a funeral director and embalmer. He returned to wrestling 1984, oncde again as Percy Pringle. Rick Rude recommended him to Vince McMahon in 1990 and the rest, as they say, is history. Brother Love, the Undertaker’s original manager, passed him on to the ghost faced Paul Bearer and his mystical urn in 1991. Over the next 11 years, his shrill, “Ohhh yesssss!” would excite fans worldwide.

Bill Moody is survived by his 2 sons, Micheal and Daniel (who currently wrestles as DJ Pringle), and will be sorely missed. I expect a tribute from the WWE on their next broadcast. I had the great pleasure of meeting him for the first time this past November and found him to be everything I had ever heard he was and more.

Rest…..In…..Peace

Here’s a little something to remember him by…..

Rest In Peace Bill Moody AKA Paul Bearer! The Wrestling World Will Surely Miss You! “Ohhh Yesssss!”

  2. Bearer was quite possibly the last “real” manager in wrestling. A character that made an impact without actually fighting in the ring. Today’s WWE could learn a lot from its past by bringing back some meaningful managers that actually make a difference in the storylines of their wrestlers.

When you write down the managers that mattered in wrestling, Paul Bearer is near the top along with Miss Elizabeth and Bobby the Brain.

Just sat down and reviewed my own work from last year as it was announced Monday night that Bill Moody will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame this year. Inductions are Saturday night, April 5th, the evening before WrestleMania XXX.
