In the 1980s, I was “Going Ape!” with Tony Danza

At some point in the 1980s, I am not sure what year exactly, HBO started running the Tony Danza movie, “Going Ape!” As a fan of just about anything simian at the time, I was instantly hooked on a film that many consider, for lack of a better description, not good. Sure the movie is silly and the acting is sometimes labored, but not only do you get some fun Danny DeVito over-the-topness, but you also get 3..count em 3…orangutans named Rusty, Poppy, Teeger. Who steal every scene they are in.

The movie, a comedy is about a guy named Foster (Tony Danza), who inherits a fortune from his rich circus performer father on one condition. He must care for and keep out of trouble his three pet orangutans. Those three of course don’t make it easy, and wacky hi-jinks ensue.

For those wanting to see this classic, I have good news and bad news. The bad news is the film is not available on a studio released DVD and a VHS copy can get pretty pricey. The good news is that the film is available for streaming at Amazon Instant Video and Netflix Watch Instantly. If you have either of those services might I suggest a fun night of monkey movie madness with Danza and 3 scene stealing orangutans?
