Rediscover with your family the endearing story between Pete and his invisible dragon friend Elliott as they develop a special bond and share a magical friendship. With memorable characters and heartwarming songs including the 1977 Academy Award® “Best Original Song” nominee, “Candle On The Water,” Pete’s Dragon 35th Anniversary is the perfect timeless classic every member of your family will love.
I was lucky enough as a kid to have the Disney Channel. At some point they starting broadcasting Pete’s Dragon a movie I had never seen. Watching it the first time was absolutely magical. After all what dice rolling kid did not dream of having his own pet dragon? Well, as it turns out, in my neighborhood, at least 2 of my friends. They came over once when Pete’s Dragons was just beginning and while I am not sure what we had planned for that afternoon, it changed to watching a movie about kid with his magical dragon. We loved it so much that we checked the Disney Channel Magazine to see when it was being re-broadcast and all made plans to watch it again (we did this whenever it was on).
So Pete’s Dragon was pretty awesome to a younger me, but will it hold up to viewings as an adult? It turns out that it does. Maybe it is pure nostalgia or maybe it is that Disney “magic”, but once I put put this disc into the player I was transported straight back to watching it on the large brown couch in my living room as a kid.
I watched this with another adult and unfortunately they did not feel to the same way, so I think the Pete’s Dragon magic is subjective. Still if you turn out to be a fan (or know you are), Pete’s Dragon: 35th Anniversary Edition is a real treat.
It looks and sound great on Blu-ray (much nicer than I remember it being), as is typical of the Disney release, and it also comes with a DVD for those of you who are still using them.
In addition to a great film you get some bonus extras, including:
- Brazzle Dazzle Effects: Behind Disney’s Movie Magic Featurette
- A deleted sequence comprised of storyboards and voice work
- The original concept storyboard reel for Boo Bop Bopbop Bob (I Love You, Too)
- Two Trailers
While I would have liked some more extras. I am pretty happy with this release. Pete’s Dragon is usually not the top of anyone’s favorite Disney movie list, but it has a special place in my past. That is why I am very happy to have the Pete’s Dragon: 35th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray on my shelf.
