Another great video from Vestron’s “How to Beat Video Games” series, explaining how to beat “Asteroids” for the Atari 2600:

  1. I didn’t know you had hyperspace and shields in the 2600 version of Asteroids. That’s what I get for not reading the manual. I always played in the way demonstrated. I never moved, but just rotated in the middle.

I also just realized that Asteroids is kinda lame. It was always this title that I held in awe for some reason, but if you think about it, you’re just breaking asteroids. Not killing invaders, not saving the planet. Just breaking asteroids. That’s grunt work.

Also, does anyone else think the Asteroids ship looks like the Apple Logo turtle?

  2. I never had a manual, I got my copy used (along with the system, and about a dozen other games). I did figure out that you could warp, but never knew there were shields.
Generally though, I find both moving with the jets & teleporting more hassle than useful 99% of the time (especially warping, since you never know where you’ll land). It’s infinitely easier to just stay at the starting point.
