Captain Cornelius Cartoon’s Cartoon Lagoon is Coming to DVD this Fall

Are you a fan of Saturday Mornings? Not the Saturday Mornings you have as an adult, but the ones you had when you were a kid. Great times where, lost in fantasy, you sat in front of your TV all morning and watched cartoons and ate your favorite cereal until your parents forced you out the door? Well so did artist/creator Manny Galan (Marvel and Archie Comics) and he decided to focus his talent into recapturing the magic from that era by creating Captain Cornelius Cartoon’s Cartoon Lagoon.

In this magical animated/puppet adventure we join WET WILLY JONES and AXEL RODD McGEE on their undersea quest aboard the MANTA RAY, a cartoon-retrieving vessel commanded by CAPTAIN CORNELIUS CARTOON. This show adventure plumbs the depths of CARTOON LAGOON in search of the best and the worst cartoons ever made. The show is coming to DVD this fall, but you can catch a sneak peek of it right now.

Based on the trailer, it looks like it’s just going to use the ancient public domain cartoons that you find on all the $1 DVDs. It’s a nice concept, but if it’s only going to use those cartoons, then it really isn’t worth full DVD prices for a handful of PD cartoons & a puppet show, when you can get 400+ of the same cartoons (minus the puppet show) for $1.

I saw a webshow with a similar concept a few years ago, it had a name like cartoon circus or something. IIRC, it was set up to resemble (mock?) a typical children’s show, with adult hosts in costumes introducing the cartoons & reviewing them. It was targetted at adult aduiences, and made use of old PD cartoons. I’ll post it if I can find it again.

  2. From what I have seen it looks high quality proof of concept. So I would not doubt the use of public domain or low budget stuff, but in the right hands you can do a lot with those toons (besides just enjoy them as cartoons).

The puppet portion does seem to be good quality, and the idea of mixing computer animation (for the eyes/noses/mouths) onto actual puppets is certainly unique. The hype (even on their own blog) however leads one to believe that it involves actual saturday morning cartoons, rendering the appearance of nothing but old PD toons in the trailer as a big let down.
It is of course possible that they will use scooby or smurfs or something & merely used PD toons for the commercial or as an early proof of concept. Unfortunately there’s no way to know for sure until the DVD comes out.

  4. Well I certainly recall watching The Undersea Adventures of Captain Nemo on Saturday morning, Drahken. I’m not sure if that’s public domain or not…but I will say I certainly like the style they’ve adopted here and I look forward to getting my hands on the DVD when it comes out. :D

This looks awesome… Too bad they can’t run this during Sunday mornings on Cartoon Network or something… Then they could probably use some of the WB library as well…
