Behind The Scenes: Our Man In Havana (1959)

As always a huge thanks to Quint over at Ain’t It Cool News for sharing these fantastic behind the scenes photos. This photo today made me do a double take, it’s Maureen O’Hara and Sir Alec Guinness…with Fidel Castro!

Quint says: “I know what day it is, but I swear this is not a photoshopped gag picture. While Sir Alec Guinness, Maureen O’Hara and Fidel Castro aren’t exactly the most likely trio, this is a legit picture.

Guinness and O’Hara co-starred in a nifty common-man-in-over-his-head espionage flick called Our Man In Havana, directed by The Third Man’s Carol Reed. This 1959 movie is a bit obscure, but if you dig it up I think you’ll like it. It’s about a British man living and working in Cuba who is asked by the British government to recruit locals to be spies. It’s light, but fluff and things go from bad to worse as this vacuum seller gets caught up in a big lie that puts him and his family in very real danger.

One of the interesting things about the film is that they went on location in Cuba to shoot it, so there’s a very authentic feel to it that you don’t get from many films of this time period. Cue this photo, which was taken during filming as Fidel Castro dropped by for a visit.”

I have not had the pleasure of seeing this film myself but I did find the trailer for it on YouTube and it looks incredibly good.

  1. I’ve never seen the movie, but I remember hearing a radio drama version when I was younger. It was hilarious.
