I had heard about Tall Story, but it is one of those films that just never seemed to cross my path in a convenient enough way for me to watch it. Plus every time I attempted to pick up a copy on DVD I was rebuffed. Tall Story was not available. That was until last week when the Warner Archive released this classic, remastered on DVD.
Tall Story is directed by Joshua Logan and stars Anthony Perkins and Jane Fonda as students at a fictional Custer University. Perkins is an honor student and college basketball star. Fonda’s character has come to the university to study home economics and to find a husband (namely a star basketball player and honor student). That is the setup and from there things start going a little crazy, you have gambling syndicates, a game vs. a visiting Russian team and much much more.
I don’t want to give away the whole plot, but I do want to comment on one part. The film ends in one of my favorite school movie cliches that had to be established around this time, although I am not sure if this is the film that did it. (hint: it involves having to take a test). Oh and a very similar scene will be repeated 20 years later with the same actor playing the teacher in another classic film. (aloha)
If you are a fan of lighthearted farces or are just a fan of Perkins of Fonda, Tall Story is definitely worth taking a look at it. It is not groundbreaking, except in that it gave Fonda her first role, but it is very entertaining and is certainly a good way to spend an evening.
