Arcade Mega-Hits: Volume 1 (C64)

This month marks the 30th anniversary of my favorite computer of all time, the Commodore 64. Next week I’ll be typing up a more lengthy tribute to the machine, but today I thought I’d just share one of the titles from my personal collection.

Mindscape’s Arcade Mega-Hits: Volume 1 was a “greatest hits” rebundling of five classic games: Paperboy, Road Runner, Blockbuster, Gauntlet, and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. This package was released in 1989 and contained no new titles (all of these titles were previously released between 1985 and 1987). Even so, the bundle was still a nice way to pick up five games for essentially the price of one. In 1989, the aging Commodore 64 would have been competing with the newly launched Sega Genesis, which explains the relatively inexpensive price of this collection.

“Snakes … why did it have to be snakes?”

From what I understand, retailers had a difficult time keeping this game on the shelf — literally. The box is so big and oversized that it was difficult to display on store shelves. I have found several copies of this package over the years unopened, and suspect that many of them were never put out due to their large size. One thing’s for sure: I know the box won’t fit in a standard size mailbox!

Although the games weren’t arcade perfect, they certainly weren’t bad for a machine that only contained 64k of RAM.

Thanks to Lemon64.com for the screen shots, MadCommodore for the YouTube video of Gauntlet, and Commodore for 30 great years of 8-bit classics!

  1. It’s funny, I thought games on C64 felt and looked better than NES, but this Mindscape collection isn’t as impressive as other titles for the C64.

However, I haven’t played the Temple of Doom, only in the arcade.

Defenders of the Crown, anyone? =)
